New York-based jazz violinist Christian Howes will perform at the Jazz Hall of Fame on Thursday.

The nationally known jazz violinist will also perform in Stillwater on Saturday as part of a statewide Honors String Orchestra held at Oklahoma State University.

 “I thought this would be a nice opportunity to visit the Jazz Hall of Fame in Tulsa since I’ll already be in the area working with high school string players from around the state," Howes said.

Tickets are available at the door (111 E. 1st St.) or call 918-281-8609. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors, Jazz Hall members and college students and $5 for students over 12. Table seating reservations are $20 each. Show time is 7:30 p.m.

 An Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music, the 37-year-old violinist is also well-known as a music educator, especially in the niche area of jazz and improvising string players.

“Violinists, cellists, and violists are starting to see that they can have original voices too, just like other instrumentalists common in popular music such as guitarists and saxophonists," Howes said. "Part of my mission in teaching kids is to encourage them to explore what music has to offer them and in turn give them an avenue to express themselves.”

Christian worked with the late Les Paul for 11 years. He’s also played with a who’s who of jazz stars including Greg Osby, Bill Evans, Dafnis Prieto, Dave Samuels, Spyro Gyra, and more.

In August, 2009,  Christian was ranked (for the third time) as the #2 violinist in the Downbeat Critics Poll "Rising Stars". Says All About Jazz ,"as a jazz violinist he has no peer".  The Minneapolis Tribune called Christian "arguably the most intriguing young violinist in jazz”.
