OKLAHOMA CITY – The Attorney General’s Office will join consumer specialists, legislators and media representatives on Tuesday, April 1, for the 2014 Oklahoma Consumer Protection Day. The free event is designed to help Oklahomans avoid fraud, identity theft and scams.
Consumer Protection Day will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free document shredding will be available until 2 p.m. at the AG’s Office – 313 NE 21 (just southwest of the State Capitol).
“The Attorney General’s Office is proud to once again host this important event for all Oklahomans,” Attorney General Scott Pruitt said. “We receive reports every day of families or seniors who’ve been victimized by criminals through fraudulent contracting, financial scams or identity theft. Oklahomans need to be aware of how to avoid these crimes and protect their families from deceptive practices. The more information they have, the better prepared they’ll be.”
OAG agents and specialists will be available to discuss a variety of consumer issues and provide tips on how to avoid consumer fraud. On the south circle drive of the AG’s Office, MIDCON Data Services®, a statewide document shredding company, will provide free document shredding. To avoid long lines later in the day, participants are asked to arrive early.
At 10 a.m. Attorney General Pruitt will announce this year’s recipient of the Brad Edwards Consumer Champion Award along with Edwards’ daughter Ashton. The award is given annually in honor of late journalist Brad Edwards, who was a champion for consumers for 25 years with his “In Your Corner” segment on KFOR-TV Ch. 4 in Oklahoma City.
